Muscat, capital of Oman lies in a cove on the Arabian Sea along the Gulf of Oman. The Hajar volcanic mountains dominate the inland landscape of Muscat.
Known since the early 1st century AD as an important trading port between the west and the east, Muscat was ruled by various indigenous tribes as well as foreign powers such as the Persians, the Portuguese Empire and the Ottoman Empire at various points in its history.
Today Muscat's economy, like that of Oman, is dominated by trade. The economy of Oman is mainly centred around its oil sector, with fishing and trading activities located around its coastal regions. Oman's economy and revenues from petroleum products have enabled Oman's dramatic development over the past 50 years.
Recognising the importance of a dynamic entrepreneurial environment, the government is trying to diversify the economy from being reliant on petrol.
I look forward to welcoming you to Muscat.
